Anxiety is treatable through a variety of therapeutic modalities. So, an anxiety therapist can work with you to learn which type of therapy will work best for you. We also can brainstorm different skills or methods known to manage anxiety. Our dedicated therapists work with you to help regain power over your anxiety. So, feel free to check our therapists and choose one that would be a good fit for you or a loved one.
There are Five Major Types of Anxiety Disorders
GAD
Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by chronic anxiety, exaggerated worry, and tension. This may occur when there is little or nothing to provoke it. And, it is the most common type of anxiety.
OCD
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts and/or repetitive behaviors. Examples of repetitive behaviors are hand washing, counting, checking, or cleaning, and occur to prevent obsessive thoughts. Yet, these so-called “rituals,” provide only temporary relief. Not performing them will often increase anxiety.
Panic Disorder
Panic disorder is characterized by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear. These episodes also include physical symptoms. This may include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, or abdominal distress.
Social Anxiety
Social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, is characterized by overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. This phobia can’t be limited to only one type of situation. It may include fear of speaking. This may also include fear of eating or drinking in front of others. On the other hand, it may be more severe. It may apply to anytime one is around other people.
PTSD
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after exposure to a terrifying situation. These situations often expose people to grave physical harm or threat. Traumatic events that may trigger PTSD include violent personal assaults, natural/human-caused disasters, accidents, or military combat. Learn more about it on our page PTSD, Trauma & EMDR.
